Cadets gather at Mumbai seminar

Northern Marine cadets reported feeling “confident, informed and motivated” following a dedicated cadet seminar held recently in Mumbai.

Twenty-seven Indian deck and engine cadets attended the one-day event, designed to enhance their understanding of company expectations and prepare them for the challenges of a maritime career.

Onshore leaders from Northern Marine’s India and UK offices, along with senior seafaring officers, delivered presentations on a range of topics.

Of the 27 cadets in attendance, six were female—reflecting Northern Marine’s commitment to fostering a more diverse and inclusive seafaring workforce.

Prior to the cadet seminar, separate seminars were held for ratings and officers, allowing a significant portion of the regionally based seafaring workforce to engage with onshore management and peers from other vessel types.

Following the event, Deck Cadet Aarya Bhosale said: “Overall, the seminar was a well-organized and informative event that addressed the holistic development of a cadet—from personal safety and mental resilience to long-term career planning.

"The speakers’ experiences and advice offered real-world relevance, making the session highly beneficial for those at the early stages of their maritime journey.

"We left the seminar feeling more confident, informed and motivated to face the unique challenges of a seafaring career with a proactive and positive attitude.”

After attending the Officers’ Seminar, Capt. Malcum Dias commented: “The Officers' Seminar was commendably organized by the team at NMM Mumbai.

“The event was thoughtfully structured and delivered significant value to all participating officers.

“One of the key takeaways was the emphasis on understanding the diverse and sensitive needs of different genders. The sessions effectively fostered a culture of respect, empathy and mutual understanding.

“Importantly, the seminar also encouraged critical reflection on the mindsets and behaviours that contribute to gender stereotypes and inequalities, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable environment.”

As of 29th May, Northern Marine has 191 cadets representing a wide range of nationalities. The largest groups come from the United Kingdom, India, and the Philippines, with many other countries also represented.

The Mumbai seminars are the latest in a series of seafarer engagement events held across Europe and Asia.
