Northern Marine is diversifying its multinational seafarer pool through a new long-term recruitment programme in South Africa.

A new partnership with the South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) in Cape Town has been established, with experienced officers now being recruited and deployed into Northern Marine’s managed fleet of vessels.

Plans are also in place to soon begin enrolling South African cadets into training.

Barrie Finlayson, Head of Crewing, NMMS, said: “At Northern Marine people are our key asset, as evidenced by our sizable, multinational pool of seafarers that ensures safe operation of our clients’ vessels.

“Through our newly developed partnership with SAMTRA, South Africa is now considered one of our strategic recruitment hubs, complementing our well-established major recruitment centres in Europe and Asia.

“Our first considerations when employing any new officers are their qualifications, experience, adaptability and ensuring they meet the legislative requirements for time spent on tankers - in South Africa there is a growing pool of seafarers that meet those requirements.

“Our activity in South Africa will include a Cadet programme, further ensuring we produce seafarers who are immersed from the start in our culture of safety and quality, receiving the opportunity for career progression through the ranks.”

Chief Officer Jacobus Appelgryn, who joined Northern Marine in May and currently works on a managed tanker said: “From the first contact that was made, the professionalism and attention to every detail throughout my application process was an immediate attraction point.

“It was an easy choice from my side to join.

“As with the interview and induction process, the level of professionalism, the care for employees and close attention to all procedures onboard, especially safety aspects, is absolutely appreciated and drives one to ensure this high level of care is maintained.”

Third Engineer Nzuzo Ningiza joined Northern Marine in June and is currently deployed on a tanker.

He added: “When my previous employer sold off their tanker division, I saw no other better fit for me as I am looking to expand my constantly developing knowledge.

“With Northern Marine I also saw the opportunity for growth career wise, and the sense of stability, as these are really challenging times.

“Northern Marine is a quite diverse company culturally, socially and in their work dynamics too.

“Safety and the well-being of employees is highly regarded.

“I am also very appreciative of Northern Marine’s open communications skills and feel very welcomed and at home.”

South Africa has been a lead crew supply source for African shipping since the 1950’s. Northern Marine is thankful for the support of the South African authorities towards the training initiatives in mention.
